Welcome to Safe Kids

Safe Kids York County is one of more than 600 grassroots coalitions in all of 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico that bring together health and safety experts, educators, corporations, foundations, governments and volunteers to educate and protect families. Safe Kids York County is a member of Safe Kids Worldwide, a global network of organizations dedicated to preventing accidental injury. www.safekids.org    

Mission

Safe Kids York County, a coalition of public, private, and voluntary organizations, identifies and prevents childhood injuries through education, networking and advocacy. The coalition supports the major risk themes of Safe Kids Worldwide as applicable to local childhood injury needs.

Goal

To enhance the capacity of childhood injury prevention programs in York County by empowering families and communities to create safe environments in cars, on bikes, and at home.

Accidental injury is the number one cause of death among children ages 14 and under in the United States. Also, each year one out of every four children needs medical attention for an accidental injury.

Unintentional Childhood Injury Facts

  • Top 3 causes of death for ages 19 and under:
    • Motor Vehicle traffic crashes
    • Drowning
    • Suffocation
  • 1 in 9 children ages 19 and under in the US will be seen in an emergency department for a non-fatal unintentional injury
  • Injuries related to falls in York County are higher than the state average
  • Emerging Trends:
    • The number of serious injuries or deaths in the US as a result of button batteries has increased more than 9 fold in the past decade
    • On average, 17 children die from TV tip-overs each year in the US
